Honey Springs Rd off the 94 in Jamul

Avena Sativa

Wild Oats, good food for the nervous system. Full of minerals including Magnesium and Silica. Horses like it (and goats too.) Oats greeted us on our way through the gates. One of the best treatments for those suffering with nerve disorders is to take the green oat tops, soak them overnight in water, than throw them into the blender the next day. Strain out the mixture and drink as frequently as you like. The milky extract of oats can facilitate the protection of the myelin sheath, the coating on the outside of the nerve.

Fallopia convolvulus

Wild Buckwheat grows in abundance throughout San Diego County. With all the wild oats and buckwheat on this walk we could make pancakes. The cool thing about buckwheat is that its not a grain, and so it is a great food for those suffering from celiac disease. It is considered safe and nourishing as a food.

Foeniculum vulgare

Fennel was brought here by the European settlers and is considered an alien invasive species. I consider it to be one of the best medicines found in San Diego. The seeds are carminative and help with digestive distress such as gas and bloating. The green leafy parts of the plant can be used as a tea or in salads.

Plantago Major

Plantain always grows near flowing water it is a moist plant and is one of the most useful first aid plants you will find. It has ribs that run in a parallel pattern the entire length of the leaf and a conical flower. I've had great experience with Plantain as a healer of wounds on the skin and in the mouth. It is wonderful as a poultice for bee sting or crazy caterpillar poison. I currently harvest it for a friend with stones in her salivary glands, a very rare disorder. The plantain contains the proper minerals and vitamins to dissolve these stones so she can avoid painful
and expensive surgery.

Silybum marianum

Milk Thistle is one of the most asked for herbs at the health food stores. It is known to help protect the cells of the liver from damage. It is a great herb to use when there are issues with liver disease and improper digestion of fats. I give the seeds as a dec
oction tea to people who suffer with skin rash. 4 cups of this tea a day will clear up a rash in 2 days.

What a gorgeous day! Thank you Mother Earth for your abundance this Spring day!

  1. I'm hoping that you will continue to post. The idea of gathering your own herbs reminded me of a book I'm reading called "In Defense of Food." I can only recognize sage and peppermint, but there is something awesome about the bounty of awesome stuff we've grown with in this planet. We are all quite literally related to all that lives. We share 500 genes with these plants :)
